HEADER DOMINATION-GEORGE STRAIT TEAM ROPING

I recently had a question asked to me about the header domination at the George Strait Roping. This person wanted to know why in the last few years the headers seem to win, or had a chance to win, 1st and 2nd. I said that I didn't know. But this question did bring about some thoughts on the subject. So I did a little investigating.

In 2008, Travis Tryan, won 1st and 2nd.
In 2007, Nick Sartain, won 1st and maybe should have won 2nd,
except for a questionable call by the field flagger.
In 2006, Speed Williams, won 1st and 2nd.
In 2005, Speed williams, won 1st and 4th.

Does seem to be a trend starting there, doesn't it?????????


First of all, maybe it is because the header is the quarterback of the team. In my opinion, he is about 85% to 90% of the team. In other words, he is the cake, and the heeler is the frosting. When the set-up suits one particular header, he is going to rope well. It might not really matter who is heeling, (the heelers all seem to rope really well), then that particular header has a chance to do really well.

Maybe it is because these guys are the best in the business, and it is only a matter of time before they have their chance to do really well.

Maybe it is because our sport is really starting to get to a point where it is a headers game, and the heelers are a dime a dozen.

On the flip side, some heelers have placed twice at this roping, Allen Bach, Clay O'Brien, Kory Koontz, to name a few.

Could be...........that the heeler is only as good as his header lets him be!!!!!!!!
Now that is an interesting thought and we could have an interesting discussion about that.

But we will save that one for a later date.

USTRC's CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM - HOW FAIR IS IT?

What were the main reasons behind the USTRC’s change to the TRIAD system? If I recall right, the change was supposed to create more space for low number team ropers, so they weren’t all lumped together in one number classification. They said there wasn’t enough room to classify them correctly. So they moved almost everyone two numbers. Then, most all of the ropers that supported them, got their numbers lowered, anyway. What is up with that?
Everyone says that the classification system is fair and even, everywhere. From state to state, all number 4's are supposed to be of equal ability. Well, I have roped enough, and been around enough, to know that is not true! Anyone who doesn’t believe that, needs to compare a # 4 in Texas, to a # 4 in Ohio, or anywhere else for that matter. There is no comparision!!!!!
I think, what they needed to say, was that there wasn’t enough room in Texas. In almost every other state, there is plenty of room. In most states, most of the ropers are numbered from best to worst, starting with the highest number possible, with no numbers skipped. This means that a roper classified as a #4 in Texas, might possibly be a #6 in some other state. Sometimes, there might need to be a few numbers skipped, between ropers, say from a #6 to a #4, with NO #5's in that state, but that doesn’t happen. If you were to see that happen, then you might could say that all ropers are numbered equally, all over the US. A #6 is a #6, anywhere, and a #4, is a #4.
Another thought, whatever happened to the idea, that as a roper improved they would move up in classification, and have to rope in higher numbered ropings? As it works now, most of them can wine a little bit about their raised number, and if they go to all USTRC’s ropings, they can get their number lowered back to where it was!!!!!
I don’t really think it is so much about your level of roping ability, as it is about how many times you are willing to enter and pay the $100 stock charge.
